4R. H. F. Oldman
to Harrod, 11 December 1919
[a]
Oldman, John
Simon's election agent for the Spen Valley by-election, invites
Harrod to take contact with the sub-agent and undertake canvassing
work where this is required.
[1]
- 1. The
by-election took place in January 1920. Simon, an independent
Liberal, was defeated by the Labour candidate (he returned to
Parliament only at the 1922 general election, representing the
Spen Valley division of Yorks). For further correspondence on
Harrod's canvassing see letters
5 R and 6 R; on the
disagreement between Simon and Lloyd George, whose Coalition
Liberal candidate siphoned off enough votes from Simon to
determine his defeat, see for instance D. Dutton, Simon. A
Political Biography of Sir John Simon, London: Aurum Press, 1992,
pp. 55-56.
