Somerville (1897-1963), was born in New Zealand and educated mainly at home in Scotland, and later at Somerville College, Oxford. She joined the BBC in 1925 as schools assistant to the education director and became director of school broadcasting (1929-47). She also was secretary of the Central Council for Schools Broadcasting (1929-35), assistant controller (1947-50) and controller (1950-55) of the Talk Division.
