Educated at Brighton College and Queen's College, Oxford, Ryle (1900-76) was a lecturer (succeeded Sutton in 1924), Student and tutor (from 1925) in philosophy at Christ Church, and Waynflete professor of metaphysical philosophy, Oxford (1945-68). He was editor of Mind from 1947 to 1971.
