Educated at the University of Amsterdam, Polak (1914- ) began his career as an economist at the League of Nations in Geneva (1937-49), where he assisted Tinbergen in the statistical inquiry on business cycles theories. Then he joined the staff at Princeton (1940-43) and the Research Department of the IMF (1947-79), of which he eventually became director. He was visiting professor at Johns Hopkins (1949-50 and 1987) and at the George Washington universities (1950-55).
