Pember (1862-1954) was educated at Harrow and Balliol College, Oxford, and called to the bar at Lincoln's Inn (1889). He was fellow of All Souls since 1884, then estate bursar (1910-14) and warden (1914-32), and vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford (1926-29).
