Malcolm (1869-1953, knighted 1922) was educated at Eton and Sandhurst. He served in India, Uganda, South Africa and the First World War, being promoted to major-general. He was a founder and member of the British (later Royal) Institute of International affairs; in 1926 he became chairperson of Chatham House, and remained in charge until 1935. Then he was High Commissioner for German refugees at the League of Nations in Geneva (1936-38).
