Educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford, Leveson-Gower (1858-1951, knighted 1921) was private secretary to Gladstone when Prime Minister (1880-85). He was a Liberal Member of Parliament (1885-86 and 1890-95), junior lord of the Treasury (1885-86), comptroller of H. M.'s Household (1892-95), chairperson of the Home Counties Liberal Federation (1905-08) and commissioner of Woods and Forests (1908-24).
