Hetherington (1888-1965) was educated at Dollar Academy and the University of Glasgow, where he took classics, philosophy and economics. He was a lecturer at the Department of Philosophy of the University of Glasgow (1910-14) and at the University of Sheffield (1914), professor of logic and philosophy at University College, Cardiff (1915-20), principal and professor of philosophy at the University College in Exeter (1920-24), professor of moral philosophy at Glasgow (1924), until he became vice-chancellor at the University of Liverpool (1927) and principal of the University of Glasgow (1936-71).
