Griffith (1889-1962) was educated at Marlborough and Balliol College, Oxford; he was president of the Oxford Union Society in 1912. He was barrister-at-law at the Inner Temple and North-Eastern Circuit, recorder of Richmond Yorks (1932-40) and a county court judge (1940-56). A Liberal Member of Parliament from 1928 to 1940, he was private secretary to the home secretary (1931-32).
