Gordon Walker (1907-80, created Baron 1974) was educated at Wellington College and Christ Church, Oxford, where he was Student and tutor in history from 1931. He unsuccessfully fought for the Oxford City parliamentary seat in 1935, was the initial Labour candidate in 1938 but withdrew in favour of A. D. Lindsay , and eventually won a by-election in 1945. He was under-secretary of state (1947-50) and Secretary of State (1950) to the Commonwealth Relations Office, Minister without Portfolio (1966) and Secretary of State for Education and Science (1967-68).
