Educated at Winchester, New College, Oxford, Paris and Göttingen, Fisher (1865-1940) was Chichele lecturer in foreign history (1911-12), vice-chancellor of Sheffield University (1912-16), warden of New College from 1925, fellow (from 1907) and president (1928-32) of the British Academy, and governor of the BBC (1935-39). He was National Liberal Member of Parliament 1916-26, representing English Universities (1918-26).
