Failing (1884-1977; knighted 1958) was educated at Marlborough and Balliol College, Oxford. He was Prize fellow of All Souls College (1906-11), lecturer at the University of Toronto (1907-09), lecturer at Christ Church (1909), where he became Student and tutor (1911-46). He was university lecturer in modern history (1928-36), Ford's lecturer in English history (1931-32) and Chichele professor of modern history, Oxford (1946-50). Thereafter he was professor emeritus at the University of Oxford.
