Educated at King's College, Cambridge, where he was a favourite pupil of Marshall, and at London School of Economics, Fay (1884-1961) was fellow and lecturer at Christ's College (1908-22), professor of economic history, University of Toronto (1921-30), and reader and reader emeritus in economic history at the University of Cambridge.
