586R. Naomi
Mitchison to Harrod, 30 September
1936
[a]
Mitchison will
treasure the photograph of Harrod with which the Editor of the
Evening Standard has illustrated Harrod's article on
population. [1]
- 1. Harrod, "We
Must Have Larger Families" (
1936:10 ), here as press item
11 (the article was illustrated with three
photographs--without caption--representing babies). Mitchison was
involved with the birth-control clinics movement, which she meant
however as a step towards the emancipation of women rather than as
a form of population control (J. Benton, Naomi Mitchison. A
Biography, Glasgow: HarperCollins, 1990, pp. 40-41).
Harrod's article also stimulated ironic comments from Roger
<Chervode> (letter to Harrod, 29 September 1936, HPBL Add.
71191/202-3).
- a. From
River Court, Hammersmith Mall, W.6. # , APcS,
addressed to Christ Church but forwarded to Campden Hill
Square, in HPBL Add. 71191/204.
