Thank you for letting me see these proofs. [1] I hardly dare to write about the book, I have behaved so awfully about it. [2] My only consolation is that reflection has removed the difficulties which at first [b] I thought I saw, and tried feebly and for so long, to write to you about. I enclose two notes on the points which seem to me rather important in the proofs. They are not dissenting notes, but pleas for further explanations which, perhaps, you have deliberately excluded.
