19R. H. B. W. Joseph to Harrod,
24 October 1921
[a]
Joseph,
addressing Harrod as "the Secretary of the Jowett Club", asks whether
Harrod would bring Whitehead to dinner with him on the 4th.
[1]
- 1. Harrod was
elected on 14 May 1921 as the secretary of the Jowett Society for
Michaelmas term 1921 (JS, Ms. Top. Oxon. d. 359/1). Whitehead was
among the speakers invited to read a paper (see also letter
20 R): he spoke on 4
November 1921 on "Relativity and Individuality". The discussion
between Joseph and Whitehead which followed the exposition is
described in Harrod, The Life of John Maynard Keynes (1951), p.
140. F. A. Lindemann and H. A. Prichard also attended (minutes of
the meeting in JS, Ms. Top. Oxon. d. 359/1).
On
3 November, Joseph asked Harrod to confirm that he was putting
Whitehead up on the occasion of his visit (letter in HPBL Add.
72730/35).
