210R. J. M. Wyllie to Harrod, 18 May 1931 [a]

On Sisam's suggestion, Wyllie asks Harrod to supply a definition for the entry "member bank" for the Oxford English Dictionary. [1]

  1. 1. Harrod supplied a definition, a suggestion about the possible future of the word and a quotation (Wyllie to Harrod, 20 May 1931, in HPBL Add. 71190/159). On 29 July Wyllie wrote again, indicating he had added a quotation from Keynes to the definition originally supplied by Harrod (in KHLM 227 ). A quotation from Keynes's Treatise on Money (Collected Writings, vol. V, p. 8) was printed in the 1933 supplement of the Oxford English Dictionary. Harrod's help was acknowledged on p. vi of the "Preface to the Supplement". On 11 September 1932, Harrod pointed out a mistake in the definition, which could therefore be avoided in the Supplement (letter not found, cited in Wyllie to Harrod, 23 September 1932, in HP IV-C/B-1).

Wyllie wrote again a year later, asking for a definition of "reflation" (see letter 256 R), and again in 1933 concerning entries on "gold" and "autarky" (letter 310 R).

    1. a. From the Oxford English Dictionary, Old Ashmolean, Broad Street # , ALS, one page, in HPBL Add. 71190/158.
