Sraffa, Piero

Sraffa (1898-1983) was educated at the University of Turin. He taught at the University of Cagliari (1924-27), then moved to Cambridge, where he became fellow of Trinity College (1927-83). His article on "The Laws of Returns under Competitive Conditions" (Economic Journal XXXVI, December 1926, pp. 535-50) sparked off a number of writings on imperfect competition theory (although this was probably not the result he hoped for his criticism of Marshallian economics), including Harrod's "Law of Decreasing Costs" ( 1931:2 ). Sraffa edited the Works and Correspondence of David Ricardo.
