Sadler, Michael Ernest

A renewed authority on educational matters, Sadler (1861-1943, knighted 1919) was educated at Rugby and Trinity College, Oxford, where he had been president of the Union Society (1882). He was secretary of the Oxford University Extension (1885-95), steward (1886-95), Student (1890-95) and honorary Student (1912) of Christ Church, Oxford, director of Special Inquiries and Reports in the Education Department (1895-1903), professor of history and administration of education, Victoria University of Manchester (1903-11), vice-chancellor of Leeds University (1911-23), president, Calcutta University Commission (1917-19) and master of University College, Oxford (1923-34). He was one of the curators of the Bodleian Library.
