Rea, Philip Russell

Rea (1900-1981, 2nd Baron of Eskdale, 1948) was educated at Westminster (where he was a contemporary of Harrod), Christ Church, Oxford, and Grenoble University. He was a founder, with Basil Herbert (who married Rea's sister, Isabel), of the Oxford University Liberal Club (1919). He became chief Liberal whip at the House of Lords (1950-55), deputy lord chairperson of committees (1950-60), Liberal leader of the House of Lords (1955-67), president of the Liberal Party (1955).
