Masterman, John (Cecil)

Masterman (1891-1977, knighted 1959) was educated at the Royal Naval Colleges of Osborne and Dartmouth, at Worcester College, Oxford, and at Freiburg University. He was appointed lecturer (1913) and then elected Student (1919-46) at Christ Church, where he was censor (1920-26). He was university lecturer in modern history, member of the Hebdomadal Council (elected in 1935) and later became provost of Worchester College (1946-61) and vice-chancellor of Oxford University (1957-58).
