Macmillan, Maurice Harold

Harold Macmillan (1894-1986; Earl of Stockton, created 1984, and Viscount Macmillan of Overden, 1984) was educated at Eton and Balliol College, Oxford. A Unionist (1924-29 and 1931-45) and Conservative (1945-64) Member of Parliament, he held various ministerial positions between 1942 and 1955 and became Chancellor of the Exchequer (1955-57) and Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury (1957-63). He was chairperson (1963-74) and then president of Macmillan Ltd., publishers, and chancellor of Oxford University (from 1960).
