La Nauze (1911-90) was educated at the Perth Modern School, at the University of Western Australia and eventually, as a Rhodes Scholar, at Balliol College (1931-34). On his return to Australia he took up various appointments at Adelaide, Sydney and Melbourne universities before joining the staff of the Australian National University as Professor of History at the Institute of Advanced Studies in 1966.
