Hitch, Charles Johnston

Hitch (1910-95) was educated at the University of Harizona, Harvard, and Worcester College (of which he was made honorary fellow in 1969). He was fellow and tutor in economics at Queen's College (1935-48) and honorary fellow from 1963. He returned to the United States in 1948, and served as assistant secretary of defence and comptroller of the Pentagon during the Kennedy administration, was professor of economics at the University of California, Berkeley (1965-75) and president of the University of California system (1968-75).
