Hammond (1872-1949) was a classical scholar at St John's College, Oxford, editor of the Speaker (1899-1906) and leader-writer on the Tribune (1906-07) and the Daily News (1907). After writing C. P. Scott of the Manchester Guardian (London: G. Bell & Sons, 1934) he was on the editorial staff of the Manchester Guardian from 1939.
