Gates, Sylvester Govett

Gates (1901-72) was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford, where he was a contemporary of Harrod. He applied for a philosophy lectureship at Christ Church in 1924 (see note 1 to letter 77 R), but eventually took on a Commonwealth Fund fellowship for Harvard in private international law (1925-27) and eventually was called to the Bar, Inner Temple (1928).
