Gaitskell, Hugh Todd Naylor

Gaitskell (1906-63) was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford. He was an active member of the New Fabian Research Bureau together with Durbin , Meade and Harrod. He was Rockefeller fellow (1933-34), reader in political economy at the University of London (1938) and, eventually, head of the Department of Political Economy, University College London. He was private secretary to the Minister of Economic Warfare (1940-42), principal assistant secretary to the Board of Trade (1942-45), Labour Member of Parliament from 1945, Minister of Fuel and Power (1947-50), Minister of State for Economic Affairs (1950), Chancellor of the Exchequer (1950-51), treasurer (1954-56) and leader (from 1955) of the Labour Party.
