Educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford, Duncan-Sandys (1908-87, Baron created 1974) entered the diplomatic service in 1930. He was a Conservative Member of Parliament (1935-45 and 1950-74) and member of the National Executive of the party in 1938-39. He was a co-founder of the Air Raid Protection Institute. He held various ministerial posts (1944-64).
