Dawson (1874-1944, born Robinson) was educated at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford. He was fellow of All Souls College, Oxford (1898), and worked in the colonial office. He held the post of editor of the Johannesburg Star (1905-10), and was also South African correspondent of The Times (from 1906). He returned to England in 1910, joined The Times (1911) and was appointed editor (1912-19 and 1923-41).
