Dalton, (Edward) Hugh (John Neale)

Dalton (1887-1962, life peer 1960) was educated at Eton, King's College, Cambridge (he studied under Pigou and Keynes ), the London School of Economics and Middle Temple (he was called to the Bar in 1914). He was Sir Ernest Cassel reader in commerce (1920-25) and reader in economics (1925-36) at London University. Labour Member of Parliament (1924-31 and 1935-59), he was a member of the national executive (1926 and 1928-52), and in 1936-37 he was chairperson of the Party. He was Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1945 to 1947, and one of his first acts was to appoint Keynes as his personal adviser. Later he occupied other ministerial positions.
