Cooper, Alfred Duff

Cooper (1890-1954, Viscount Norwich, created 1952) was educated at Eton and New College, Oxford. He joined the Foreign Office (1913-24), and in 1922 was appointed private secretary to the parliamentary under-secretary; he was Conservative Member of Parliament (1924-29 and 1931-45), First Lord of the Admiralty (1937-38: he resigned as a consequence of the Munich agreement, which he thought to be meaningless and dishonourable), Minister of Information (1940-41). He dedicated his final years to literature.
