In the 1930s Coe (1907-80) was at the Department of Political Economy, University of Toronto. Later he was director of monetary research for the Treasury Department, and became the first secretary to the IMF (1946). Two years later he was accused of being a spy and denied the accusations, but was forced to resign in 1952. He emigrated to China in 1958.
