Clark (1890-1979, knighted 1953), educated at Manchester Grammar School and Balliol College, Oxford, was a fellow and lecturer at Oriel College (1919-31), librarian 1930, and provost (1947-57), university lecturer in modern history (1927-31), proctor (1929-30), Chichele professor of economic history and fellow of All Souls College, Oxford (1931-43), Regius professor of modern history and fellow of Trinity College, Cambridge (1943-47). He was a member of the Bodleian Library Commission.
