Educated at Balliol College, Oxford, Cannan (1861-1935) lectured at the London School of Economics from its foundation in 1895 to his retirement in 1926, in the role of professor from 1907. He edited Smith's Wealth of Nations (1904) and the Glasgow Lectures on Jurisprudence (1896), and wrote, among other things, A History of Theories of Production and Distribution in English Political Economy 1776-1848 (1893), An Economist's Protest (1927) and Review of Economic Theory (1929).
