Phelps Brown (1906-94) was educated at Taunton School and Wadham College, Oxford. He was fellow of New College, Oxford (1930-47), a Rockefeller travelling fellow in 1930-31 (see note 1 to letter 181 R) and one of the original members of the Oxford Economists' Research Group. He was professor (1947-68) and eminent professor of economics of labour, University of London. At Harrod's death he published a lucid and detailed "Memoir" in the Economic Journal (1980), partly based on unpublished documents--including an autobiography--not yet publicly available.
