Educated at Christ's Hospital and Trinity College, Cambridge, Bowley (1869-1957, knighted 1950) was lecturer at the LSE from 1895, Newmarch lecturer at University College, London (1897-98 and 1927-28), mathematical lecturer at University College, Reading (1900-07), professor of mathematics and economics (1907-13), lecturer in economics (1913-19), professor of statistics in the University of London (1919-36) and acting director of the Oxford University Institute of Statistics (1940-44).
