Bode was born in 1912 in Hanover. He studied in Bonn and Vienna, but emigrated to Switzerland in 1934. At the League of Nations in Geneva he collaborated with Haberler , with whom he authored a criticism of Harrod's "Expansion of Credit in an Advancing Community". He further emigrated to Britain in 1935, and finally to the United States in 1937. He was associate professor in Stanford (1937-45).
