Betjeman (1906-84, knighted 1960), poet laureate (1972) and writer on architecture (he was assistant editor of the Architectural Review in 1930), was educated at Marlborough College and Magdalen College, Oxford. Betjeman lent Harrod the farmhouse in Berkshire where the "Essay in Dynamic Theory" was written.
