"Shaia" Berlin (1909-97) was educated at St Paul's School, London, and Corpus Christi College, Oxford. He was lecturer in philosophy at New College (1932), fellow at All Souls (1932-38, 1950-56, 1975 onwards) and New College (1938-59), Chichele professor of social and political theory, Oxford University (1957-67), and professor of humanities, City University of New York (1966-71). Berlin and Harrod met in 1929 or 1930, in the course of normal Oxford life. Berlin, then a student, was introduced to Harrod by John Sparrow and Maurice Bowra .
