Attlee, Clement Richard

Attlee (1883-1967, 1st Earl created 1955) was educated at Haileybury College and University College, Oxford. Called to the Bar in 1906 he became secretary at Toynbee Hall in 1910, and tutor and lecturer in social science at LSE (1913-23). He was a Labour Member of Parliament (1922-50), Postmaster General (1931), deputy leader of the Labour Party (1931-35) and leader of the opposition (1935-40), deputy Prime Minister (1942-45), Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury (1945-51).
