Appleton (1859-1940) had no academic education. He was secretary of the Lace Makers Trade Union (1896-1907) and of the General Federation of Trade Unions (1907-38), and authored books and articles on industrial economics subjects and trade unionism, including Unemployment (1923) and Unemployment. Its Cause and Cure (1928), to which Harrod contributed.
