Maurice Allen (1908-88) was educated at the London School of Economics. He was fellow and tutor in economics at Balliol College (1931-1948), assistant director of Research at the IMF (1947-49), adviser (1950-64) and director (1964-70) of the Bank of England, governor of the LSE (1951). He was a member of the Oxford Economists' Research Group, and signed collective letters drafted by Harrod and sent to the president of the United States and to The Times (letter 329 , press items 3 and 5 ).
