Addis, Charles (Stewart)

Addis (1861-1945, knighted 1913) was educated at Edinburgh Academy, in 1880 he joined the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank of which he was London manager (1905-21). He was director of the Bank of England (1918-32), president of the Institute of Bankers (1921-23), vice-chairperson of the Bank for International Settlements (1929-32); he was a member of the Cunliffe Currency Committee (1918-19), the Indian Currency Committee (1920), the National Debt Committee (1924-26) and the Royal Commission on Canadian Banking (1933), chairperson of the Exchange Committee Imperial Economic Conference (1923) and British delegate to the Committee of Experts for Reparations, Paris (1929).
