880R. R. A. Eden to Harrod, 22 December 1938 [a]

Eden shall be most interested to read the reprint from The Manchester Guardian on the electoral pact, which Harrod has sent him. [1]

  1. 1. Harrod, "The Opposition. An Electoral Pact Needed" ( 1938:23 ), here as press item 30 . Harrod had circulated copies of his article to a number of conservatives dissenting from the government's line on foreign policy (see note 1 to press item 30 ). The fact of sending a copy to Eden suggests that Harrod may have somewhat modified his previous opinion (as expressed to Churchill on 9 December: see letter 874 ) that Eden's attempt to form a broader National Government including some members of the Labour Party leadership was doomed to failure; see also Harrod's and Dalton's view on Eden expressed in letter 882 , [jump to page] .
