757R. Harrod to R. W. Chapman, 5 February 1938 [a]

Harrod sends a note on "Reserve" for the Oxford English Dictionary, pointing out that the usages with reference to banks and to joint stocks companies are completely different and that no common formulation is possible. [1]

  1. 1. The 1933 Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary had provided the following definition of "reserve": "The amount of capital kept on hand by a banker, insurance company, etc., in order to meet ordinary or probable demands."
