538R. F. W. Pethick-Lawrence to Harrod, 5 March 1936 [a]

Follows on from 535 R. Pethick-Lawrence thanks Harrod for his prompt reply, and wants to study his letter further. [1]

  1. 1. Harrod's letter was not found. However, Pethick-Lawrence took part in the discussion at the House of Commons on the government proposals on defence: he asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (Neville Chamberlain) how the government intended to finance the defence programme laid down in the White Paper of 3 March (cited in note 1 to letter 535 R). The Chancellor refused to answer, referring to the forthcoming budget statement. Questions and answers are reported in the Official Report, Parliamentary Debates, Fifth Series, vol. 309, 5 March 1936, p. 1554).
