381. Harrod to G. Haberler , 21 October 1934 [a]

Christ Church, Oxford #

21 October 1934

My dear Haberler

It seems to me that the best thing I can do in the circumstances is to write down and let you have the reply to your letter which I should submit in the event of its publication, and leave you to judge whether you have mis-represented me and whether you would wish to stand by what you have written. [1]

I enclose a draft accordingly. [2]

I hope you do not think it is couched in terms that are impolite or tend to lower the prestige of economists in the public estimation!

It is very good of you to let me have the copy of your reply in advance

Yours sincerely

R. F. Harrod

Alas, I have used all offprints of the QJE article and cannot get any more. [3]

  1. 1. Replies to a letter not found, enclosing Haberler's proposed letter to The Economist on "Banking Policy and Stable Prices" (1934). Haberler's letter, dated 18 October, a copy of which is among Haberler's papers (in GH Box 66), was much longer than what was actually published: the assistant editor of The Economist wrote on 24 October that they were "deluged" with correspondence on Harrod's article, and asked to summarize approximately half of it (G. Hutton to Haberler, in GH Box 66).

    2. The draft (one page, autograph, in GH Box 66) is not reproduced here. The relevant differences with the printed version (Harrod 1934:10 ) are pointed out in notes 7 , 8 , 10 , 11 , 12 and 13 to press item 9 . Haberler sent a transcription of Harrod's draft on 25 October (letter 384 , [jump to page] ).

    3. Haberler had requested a reprint of Harrod's "Doctrines of Imperfect Competition" on 3 September (letter 366 , [jump to page] ).

    1. a. ALS, two pages on one leaf, in GH Box 66.
